A very hardy perennial shrub found across almost all of Australia. They are especially abundant in deserts and saline soils where other plants struggle to grow. Even after the smallest rains they will fruit prolifically. They rely on animals to eat their tasty berries and disperse them through the environment.

One of my least favourite desert foods! With a sickly sweet chemical flavour, it's certainly one of those 'desperate times' foods. The thorny trees are very slow growing and can take hundreds of years to reach 6m. They are likely an evolutionary anachronism, having relied primarily on the now extinct diprotodon to spread its seeds in the past.

While sticky and slimy, sweet mistletoe berries seem to be well worth their time for many native animals. Mistletoes are hemiparasites! Which means they rely on their host for nutrients and water, but produce their own energy from their leaves. I'm spitting out the hard bit of stem that connects to the shell of the berry, they don't detach as easily as many other berries.

A wonderfully sweet and refreshing fruit, the Bush Banana (Marsdenia australis) Also called the doubah or silky pear, this cryptic vine can be found across much of Australia.

A sweet fig (Ficus platypoda) that grows in the barren rocky outcrops of Central Australia! This is one of my favourite fruits out here.

An edible plant that will eventually kill you if you eat it consistently! This relatively well known aquatic fern, Nardoo, led to the death of Australian explorers Burke and Wills.

Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is an edible weed found all over the world! In many places it is an urban wild food, growing in parks and even sidewalks.

An unusual sweet-savoury wild food, the Caper Bush (Capparis spinosa var. nummularia). This is actually the same species of plant that your store bought pickled capers are made from!
